NL-KVK-27367015-NL-CGIARphaseII Dutch Research Council (NWO) The Netherlands (NL) - CGIAR research programme contributes to transformational change in agriculture around the world by advancing food system knowledge and joint public and private innovation. The programme is part of the strategic partnership between the Government of the Netherlands and CGIAR. A first Phase ran from 2017-2023, Phase II runs from 2024-2030. The programme is aimed at advancing knowledge and enhancing innovation (knowledge use) for global food and nutrition security (SDG2). This is done by strengthening cooperation between CGIAR and Dutch research and knowledge institutes, and their joint engagement with National Agricultural Research and Extension Services (NARES), civil society organisations, private sector and governmental organisations. Focus of Phase II is on selected areas of mutual interest of CGIAR and Dutch policy via a range of CGIAR Research Initiatives and some CGIAR Impact Area Platforms and organisational unit(s). With the NL-CGIAR call ‘The Water-Food nexus in rainfed agri-food systems in Sub-Saharan Africa: socio-economics and governance’, research consortia will generate insights that contribute to scaling up of soil moisture retention practices. Consortia with researchers from CGIAR Research Centres, Sub-Saharan African knowledge institutes and Dutch knowledge institutes (including universities of applied sciences), as well as stakeholders from National Agricultural Research and Extension Services (NARES) and cooperation partners from local/regional/national governments are invited to submit a research proposal to the Dutch research council (NWO). This call aims to enable scaling-up of soil moisture retention practices among smallholder farmers in rainfed agri-food systems* and as such helps to mitigate negative effects from increased severity of dry spells on agricultural production. The specific objectives are: Gain insights in the socio-economic barriers and opportunities in the enabling environment for scaling of water retention practices with a changing climate; Gain insights in and provide options for governance functions and governance attributes that support scaling-up of moisture retention practices; To strengthen cooperation among CGIAR researchers, Dutch researchers and local partners.
