TZ-00NGO/R2/00060-A4RSPJ1449 KIMAS(KITOVU CHA MAENDELEO SAFI) The Agroforestry for resilience and sustainability ((A4RS)) project (January 2026 – December 2028) aims to enhance food and nutrition security, promote sustainable livelihoods, advance gender equality, conserve biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience for smallholder farmers and students in Masasi District and Town Council. This project builds on KIMAS’ previous work in food security, livelihood improvement, and ecosystem conservation through the project titled enhanced small holder farmers food and nutrition security, livelihood and eco-system conservation and will contribute to the broader ASILI B_CC programme by Vi Agroforestry and SIDA, which focuses on agroforestry, climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and biodiversity conservation across East Africa. Proposed project intends to address key challenges which Smallholder farmers in Masasi face including declining productivity, environmental degradation, climate variability, and socio-economic inequalities that limit access to land, finance, and decision making particularly for women, youth, and people with disabilities. Weak institutional capacity of local organizations further constrains coordinated sustainable interventions. To address these challenges, (A4RS) will adopt an integrated, participatory, and landscape-based approach to address the interlinked challenges of environmental degradation, low productivity, and food and nutrition insecurity in Masasi District. The approach combines sustainable land management, inclusive capacity building, value chain development, and policy advocacy to achieve lasting livelihood and ecosystem resilience. Implementation will center on agroforestry and climate-smart agriculture as the entry point for restoring soil fertility, conserving biodiversity, and improving farm productivity. Through farmer field schools and demonstration sites, smallholders will be trained in sustainable Agricultural land management practices such as biochar use, composting, farm yard manure use, intercropping, mulching and other practices of similar nature. Through this project, KIMAS will strengthen its institutional capacity to deliver inclusive, rights-based, and transparent services. Special attention will be given to empowering women, youth, and people with disabilities through access to finance, training, and leadership opportunities. To enhance household incomes, the project will promote value addition and market linkages for cashew, sesame, and legumes, supported by Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) for financial inclusion. Complementary actions will promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture, nutrition home gardens, and small livestock to diversify diets and reduce malnutrition, while community-led reforestation and policy advocacy will strengthen environmental governance and accountability. The project will directly reach 2,700 beneficiaries in Masasi District and Masasi Town Council, comprising 1,500 smallholder farmers (900 women and 600 men) and 1,200 students (600 girls and 600 boys) from 30 primary and secondary schools, including two special schools for children with disabilities. People with disabilities will account 3% of the targeted benefices. A cascade training model will be applied through 50 lead farmers, selected using participatory and inclusive criteria that prioritize commitment, innovation, and community trust. These lead farmers will be trained by KIMAS staff and Vi Agroforestry technical partners to disseminate knowledge and practices to at least two farmer groups each (about 30 farmers per group). KIMAS will provide transport support through mobile transfers to facilitate training and follow-up activities. Over the three-year implementation period, approximately 900 beneficiaries (500 farmers and 400 students) will be reached annually, with each direct beneficiary expected to influence at least three others within their households and communities resulting in an estimated 8,100 indirect beneficiaries overall.
